Digging In The Crates: July DJ Chart

This DJ Chart features deep house, IDM, dub techno, ravey breaks and modern club music. Some of these are reissues while others are fresh out of mastering. Does it all have to be fresh? Of course not. It just has to be phreshhhhH!!!

I’ve featured the cover art work for the Obergman release as I love the text and graphic work of Kerry Roper who does much of the Sushitech stuff.

As always, share the love with each other and support the artists by taking advantage of Bandcamp Fridays.

1. Paul St. Hilaire & René Löwe - Faith

I came across this dub techno track on a YouTube music rabbit hole. Originally released in 2003, and reissued in 2024 by Kynant Records. Someone uploaded the VOX version with this video of a person traveling through a Japanese city on foot with a GoPro strapped to their chest. I think it’s a really cool video idea that pairs perfectly with this track.

2. Obergman - Mirror Counterpart

This track just bangs. It is really simple with few elements but it’s all put together so immaculately. They’re calling it proto-house in blurb on Bandcamp, though the production has a techno toughness and would play well in that arena. Truth is it’s sitting really nicely at the nexus, which is why its been released on Pariter (Sushitech sub label). With Sushitech you get really high quality mastering that will sound good in the club. Definitely check out Sushitech if you haven’t already.

3. Anna Schreit - Enzio On Rainbow Road

Resident of the well known Sisyphos club in Berlin, Anna Schreit offers this three track ep EP of mood-setters on Compost Records. Sample based house tracks. Nice use of vocal samples. Bass is really upfront. I just like the sound!

4. Frits Wentink - Eternity

Frits Wentink is back releasing music with some of (I think) his best work, on dutch label Royal Oak (Clone Sublabel). The reason why I really like this EP is that its modern and fresh take on early 90s house sound. You know those late 80s/early 90s Dub mixes, but with the trademark Frits production. It’s always a little to the left, known for a wonky shifty type of sound. There’s something funky about his productions and this is just really tidy.

5. Yunx - Ethics And Values

Though I’m not a fan of the term IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), I AM a fan of this music. It’s just really good Electronic music. As with much of the ‘good stuff’ there are Influences from Chicago and Detroit but this Manchester duo have really done their own thing with this 11 track EP. My tip track is Ethics And Values. It’s inspiring and leaves me with a hope for the future but with this sensed acknowledgement the past. Looking forward and looking back. The album entitled ‘Imagine The Future’. They knew what they were doing… maybe this is intelligent dance music? You be the judge.

6. Spray - Ratenplan

One hot and sweaty peak-time rave EP. Firmly on the techno side of the house and techno spectrum. It’s all business. B2 is my jam. Have a listen to that breakdown/drop-out of the percussion at 3 minutes with this roaring bass wave… ‘ooooffft’. Yes please. Every time I hear it I just lock in. With temps reaching 136 BPM just don’t forget to bring a bottle of water

7. Malin Genie - Phaethon

Dutch producer Malin Genie has been on fire lately, with some punchy releases on Bobby Donny which are also worthy of a mention. However, this release is on Chriss Stussy’s label Up The Stuss is a really diverse offering of tracks also up there in the tempo and with that modern house production. I really like the arrangement of these tracks, Phaethon in particular. Wooble is also fun and tough at the same time, whereas Phaethon is more ethereal.

8. Leonce - Tripwires (scotti dee Re-Work)

Celebrating 20 years in 2023, Nightslugs dropped this monster compilation with 23 tracks. There’s a few standouts but this mid-tempo Scott dee rework has this hypnotic bounce with heaps of little progressions in the middle of the track. Perfect for the DJs to get wild with some acapella mashup business!

9. Alton Miller - All We Have

Born in Chicago and Raised in Detroit, Alton Miller always makes really musical, soulful tunes. This one released on the Croatian record label Forbidden-Dance. I’ve road tested this EP and its quality deep-house dance music for your more discerning dancefloor.

10. Danny Son - Boarding Completed

An artist I was unfamiliar with before coming across, this one on Aleqs Notal’s label Industrial Light Recordings. It just really interesting EP deep house. Not cookie cutter at all. The first track on this EP is my pick and has featured in recent DJ mix of mine. Airy synths and strong percussive programming stand out on this EP. Another discerning dance floor release.
